Format was started in 2026 by Andrew Perry to get photographers the high-end kit they need easily and in an environmentally conscious way. The idea is simple – every job, even a last minute job, should get the kit it deserves. Edinburgh has an active creative community, and its photographers need access to the equipment that matches their ambitions. With Format, all the kit you need is just down the road, backed up by friendly, expert advice. There’s no shipping from London – pop in to collect or we’ll bring it to you at a specific time.

We have a catalogue of Profoto flash, Aputure LED and Arri HMI lighting, modifiers, light stands, boom arms and power distro available for collection or delivery across Scotland and the north-east of England. Whether it’s a fashion shoot needing mega booms and 2400Ws of flash, or a location shoot that only needs a bit of fill, we can help.

Photographers are increasingly being asked to deliver moving image as well as stills, so we stock tripods, radio mics and video lighting alongside our stills offering. We can also source video cameras. If you don’t see it in the catalogue, give us a ring and we’ll track it down and make it available for you.

We’ve built sustainability into Format from the ground up. We source as locally as possible, reducing transport miles by using manufacturers inside the EU. Most of our grip is from Manfrotto or Avenger in Italy. Our power cables are made in France and the plugs at either end are from Austria.

Some of our kit is second hand, having enjoyed an exciting and varied life before us. Now it’s cleaned up, checked over and ready for your shoot. Most of the carbon in the kit is embedded at the manufacturing stage. All we can do is keep using it until it has no further use before selling it on to a quiet retirement or sending it for recycling.

Transport is the single biggest source of ongoing emissions that we’ve identified. We use a zero-emission van for delivery and are genuinely interested in embracing new technology to reduce our environmental impact.
